Shirley Showalter  //  I'm a new grandma who has moved, along with my husband (granddad), from the semi-rural Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Brooklyn, NY, to be the "grannynanny" to grandson Owen for one year.

Owen, the Paperback Writer, Teaches Grandma the Ropes

Remember the Beatles song about the aspiring writer?

"Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer,
Paperback writer."

Owen has decided he, too, is a paperback writer. Watch him become inspired:

A few minutes later, I asked him if he wants to be a writer. He made the definitive response:

It's wonderful to spend half a day with Owen and half a day trying to show the same enthusiasm and persistence he shows as he learns new things. I am positive that the book I am writing will benefit from the gift of being granny nanny this year.

P.S. Please note that the pen in question had the ink retracted and that I was watching him carefully. :-)
